Trump Administration Poised to Send Scores Government Officers to the Bay Area
The federal government was preparing on Wednesday to deploy dozens of government officers to the northern California for a large-scale border security initiative, prompting outrage from California leaders.
Specifics of the Deployment
Information of the operation were gradually becoming clear, but it will allegedly feature approximately 100+ federal agents, based on information. The personnel are expected to begin utilizing the Coast Guard facility in the East Bay, across the bay from San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether state soldiers would participate.
Government Backlash
The deployment comes after months of threats by the president to focus on the liberal city. The state's leader Gavin Newsom criticized the move, labeling it “right out of the autocrat's manual”.
“He deploys covered agents, he sends out customs officers, he dispatches immigration officials, he generates worry and terror in the community so that he can lay claim for solving that by dispatching the military forces,” Newsom said. “This mirrors the incendiary fighting the inferno.”
City Planning
San Francisco is the newest large urban area targeted by the administration's initiative of large-scale detentions. The operation is expected to trigger a standoff between the federal government and municipal authorities who have pledged to prevent militarized immigration enforcement in the city.
San Franciscans have been gearing up for an extended period for Trump to make good on frequent statements to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday public announcement, San Francisco’s city leader emphasized that the city was ready.
“During this period, we have been expecting the possibility of some kind of national intervention in our city,” said the mayor, adding that he had implemented additional measures on Wednesday to “enhance the city’s support for our immigrant communities, and ensure our agencies are prepared prior to any federal deployment.”
Constitutional Framework
Regardless of court battles to operations in a multiple urban areas, including Illinois, Oregon and LA, Trump has asserted “complete control” to dispatch the national guard in cities, pointing to the presidential authority which enables presidents specific authority to dispatch personnel on American territory.
Local Preparation
Newsom, who once held office as San Francisco’s chief executive – had committed to intervene “without delay” to a mission in the city. “The idea that the national administration can dispatch personnel into our cities with no justification supported by evidence, no oversight, no answerability, no respect for state sovereignty – it’s a direct assault on the judicial framework,” he said on Wednesday.
Local organizations, including advocacy organizations created during the initial federal leadership, have prepared to quickly mobilize a mass rally in the city, as well as vigils at community centers.
Neighborhood Consequences
In San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, a largely Hispanic community, city supervisor informed journalists last week she and her residents had been preparing for this situation. “The time that people stop going to work, when people of color cannot move about freely without the fear of government officers discriminating against and detaining them, the time when families keep children home, are too scared to go to the supermarket or doctor,” she said. “Our ongoing preparations in the Mission is essentially a halt the scale of which we have not witnessed since Covid.”
Military Condition
About several hundred out of 4,000 regional military personnel remain federalized under an command from Trump. About two hundred of them had been dispatched to the neighboring state, where they were waiting in limbo amid a court case over their mission.
This period, Newsom said he had called the local soldiers under his control to operate distribution centers during the federal closure.
