The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that followed his controversial online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against the student leader achieved the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The controversy erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on social media that appeared to welcome the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in the United States.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on this week.

Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The notice confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were informally suspended early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, the student asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by the student had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.

His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Responses

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message criticized the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".

The communication warned that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had earlier criticized the student's comments after Kirk's death and stated that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The president-elect had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the society in May.
