FAI Backs Resolution Calling for Uefa Ban on Israeli Teams
Ireland's football governing body has voted in favor to present a formal motion to Uefa, demanding the exclusion of Israeli football from continental team and national tournaments.
Basis of the Proposed Suspension
This motion, that had been put forward by Dublin club Bohemians, highlighted alleged breaches by the IFA of two important Uefa statutes.
- Failure to implement and enforce an effective policy against racism.
- Organisation of clubs in disputed territories lacking the approval of the Palestinian Football Association.
Vote Outcome and Next Steps
As stated in an announcement from the FAI, the proposal was supported by 74 votes, with seven against and 2 abstentions.
The association intends to officially present this request to the Uefa executive committee, asking for the prompt ban of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.
During a special assembly of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was put to members. It passed by a large margin.
Previous Uefa Considerations
Uefa had previously put on hold plans to ban Israeli football at the close of last month, following the announcement of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the region.
Although Uefa never publicly stated contemplating an extraordinary meeting on the issue, preparations were understood to be well developed.
Global Backdrop
The FAI move comes after comparable calls in last autumn from the leaders of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for banning Israel from global football.
These appeals were issued after UN specialists urged Fifa and Uefa to suspend the Israeli FA, referencing a UN commission of inquiry report that accused Israel of acts of genocide during the war in Gaza.
The Israeli government has rejected these claims and labeled the report as scandalous.
Potential Consequences
Should European football's authority decide to ban the IFA, it would probably create tension with the US administration – co-hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which is firmly against such an measure.
Even though Uefa has the power to exclude Israeli teams from its tournaments, it might not be able to prevent them from taking part in World Cup qualifiers, which falls under Fifa.
