Exceptional Scarlet Electrical Discharge Photographed in the Heavens
A group of image specialists operating in New Zealand have successfully captured images of “red sprites”, among the rarest light phenomena on Earth, in which glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the heavens.
A Memorable Night of Discovery
The photographers had originally set out to photograph the night sky over the distinctive clay formations in the southern region of the country on 11 October, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon.
They thought they would be lucky to get optimal conditions that after-dark period, but their night turned into “a truly memorable experience,” a team member remarked.
While reviewing his files for a stellar landscape and found he had captured scarlet atmospheric flashes,” he said. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of screaming and shouting and all sorts going on in the night.”
Understanding Red Sprites
These crimson flashes are bursts of electrical energy in the mesosphere, generated by electrical storms. Unlike conventional electrical strikes that aims at the surface, the phenomena shoot upwards towards the upper atmosphere, producing structures that look like columns, root vegetables or even marine creatures. The earliest recorded picture of a red sprite was taken – unintentionally – in the late eighties, by a team at the a academic organization.
Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the naked eye, but an individual was fortunate. “I happened to be looking straight toward a sprite when it took place – an ideal happenstance looking at the appropriate section of the firmament and I observed a short crimson illumination,” he commented.
Witnessing the phenomena was a goal for the photographer, an acclaimed night scape photographer. “It looks like you witness an unreal vision, it’s very ethereal … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it is fascinating to see.”
Advanced and Creative Mastery
Capturing a red sprite demands a expertise in advanced imaging techniques, as well as an familiarity with science and artistic vision, the photographer explained. “It is a deeply engaging type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
One of the other individuals remarked it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his career. “I was able to observe the galactic band illuminating above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of illumination swayed above a storm far on the horizon,” he said.
An Exceptional Photographic Achievement
Based on his understanding, there are no additional photographs depicting scarlet electrical bursts and the night sky of the south in the same photograph.
“This was a singular occasion when you understand you are observing a phenomenon you’ll probably never see again.”
